Built towards the end of the 1920s, the Koepchenwerk supplied the surrounding communities with green energy a hundred years ago. There are two areas for your event in the spacious building, lined with numerous original machine sets with turbines, generators, couplings and pumps. Outside, idyllic nature awaits your guests with a view of the banks of the beautiful Hengsteysee.
The Koepchenwerk at the Hengsteysee in Herdecke is an important industrial monument that once played a central role in the energy supply of the Ruhr region. It was commissioned in 1930 as one of the first pumped storage power plants in Germany and named after its engineer Arthur Koepchen. The power station was part of an innovative energy supply system in which surplus electricity was used at times of low demand to pump water into a higher storage basin. When electricity demand was high, the water could be drained back into the lower basin, driving turbines to generate electricity.
The Koepchenwerk was in operation until 1994 and was then decommissioned. Thanks to its technical and historical value, it was listed as a historical monument in 1986. Today, the plant is one of the Ruhr region's outstanding industrial monuments and is an important testimony to the region's technical innovation.
In recent years, the Koepchenwerk has increasingly been used as a location for events and functions. The industrial charm and impressive backdrop of the power plant offer an extraordinary atmosphere for a wide variety of occasions such as company celebrations, cultural events and private functions. Its use as an event location shows how former industrial facilities can be successfully integrated into modern usage concepts without losing their historical character.
